London is set to transform key streetscapes into vibrant, open-air dining destinations this summer, thanks to a dedicated initiative spearheaded by Mayor Sadiq Khan. The Mayor’s Summer Streets Fund, a £300,000 scheme announced last month, aims to inject life into local economies and enhance public spaces by facilitating al fresco dining and extending trading hours for businesses across the capital.
The fund is specifically designed to support hospitality businesses recovering from recent challenges by providing resources for traffic management, street furniture, and the administrative costs associated with obtaining outdoor dining licences. It envisions a London where residents and visitors alike can enjoy meals and drinks outdoors, mimicking the popular café cultures found in other global cities.
Boroughs Leading the Transformation
The first four boroughs confirmed to benefit from this initial tranche of funding are Lambeth, Hackney, Waltham Forest, and Westminster. These areas, encompassing diverse and popular neighbourhoods such as Brixton, Leyton, Shoreditch, and the West End, have put forward specific proposals that leverage the fund to create distinct outdoor dining experiences.
West End Enhancements
In Westminster, the heart of London’s theatre and entertainment district, plans focus on St Martin’s Lane. This iconic street is slated to become car-free daily from 11 am to 11 pm under the scheme. This significant change will enable up to 34 businesses along the lane to introduce al fresco dining. Demonstrating the Mayor’s office’s longer-term vision, there are also future plans being considered for making this transformation a permanent fixture, signalling a potential shift in urban planning towards pedestrian-friendly zones in central London.
Shoreditch’s Weekend Buzz
Hackney’s contribution centres on Shoreditch, a dynamic area known for its vibrant nightlife and diverse culinary scene. Here, Rivington Street and Redchurch Street are designated for car-free status on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer months. This weekend closure will allow restaurants and bars on these streets to offer outdoor dining and drinking options extending until midnight. A key incentive for businesses participating in Shoreditch is the provision of free licences for the first three months, encouraging rapid adoption of the al fresco model.
Expanding Space in Brixton
Lambeth’s plans for Brixton promise a substantial expansion of outdoor dining capacity. Efforts are concentrated on Atlantic Road and Brixton Station Road, where the scheme is set to create an impressive 400sqm of new outdoor dining space. This expansion is projected to provide approximately 80 extra tables and accommodate around 400 extra seats, significantly increasing the number of patrons businesses can serve outdoors. These roads will become car-free zones on selected weekends until 10 pm, facilitating not just dining but also daytime activities such as food markets and live music, creating a lively street festival atmosphere.
Leyton’s Summer Event Focus
Waltham Forest is utilising the fund to enhance a specific summer event in Leyton. Francis Road, a popular local hub, will benefit from extended car-free hours and the introduction of outdoor dining as an integral part of this event. While details of the specific event are tied to the summer calendar, the fund ensures that participating businesses on Francis Road can maximise their outdoor potential during this period.
