Waitrose is significantly deepening its commitment to London’s retail landscape with a multi-million pound investment aimed at renovating and upgrading its physical stores across the capital. This strategic move is part of a wider £1 billion nationwide expansion and refurbishment program designed to enhance the customer experience and strengthen the premium grocer’s foothold in key urban markets.
London’s Evolving Retail Scene
As part of this significant investment, Waitrose has unveiled its latest convenience store, Little Waitrose Wandsworth New Acres, which opened its doors on October 2nd, 2025. Situated in a new neighbourhood development, the 2,500 sq ft store is expected to serve thousands of additional customers and has already created 26 new jobs. This launch follows recent substantial upgrades to its Marylebone and Clerkenwell shops, signaling a renewed focus on physical retail spaces in London, a city historically significant to the brand, with its first shop opening in Acton.
Store Enhancements and Future Plans
The investment will see several other London branches undergo transformations by the end of the year. Convenience stores in Crouch End and Old Brompton Road are set for renewal, while the Waitrose supermarket in Coulsdon will receive an upgrade. Further refurbishments are scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, with Waitrose’s London portfolio currently comprising 62 shops employing over 5,700 Partners.
Customers can expect to see a range of improvements across these updated locations. These include a refreshed look for bakery sections, enhanced fruit and vegetable displays, and the integration of more self-service tills alongside traditional staffed checkouts to offer greater choice and efficiency. Select stores, such as the Marylebone branch, are also benefiting from enhanced meat and fish counters, dedicated dry-aged beef counters, and expanded wine selections. The introduction of new John Lewis products, offering a small selection of gifts and homeware, also forms part of the store upgrades.
A Nationwide Strategy with Local Impact
This multi-million pound commitment to London is a key component of Waitrose’s larger £1 billion, multi-year store estate programme, which aims to invigorate its entire UK presence. The grocer has ambitious plans to open up to 100 new convenience stores across the UK by 2029, alongside potentially opening up to four large supermarkets. This expansion into convenience retail is a strategic response to changing consumer habits and a bid to regain market share in a competitive environment.
Tina Mitchell, Waitrose Interim Managing Director, emphasized the importance of London to the company’s success and stated, “Today, as we open our 62nd store in the capital, we’re committing to investing millions to expand and refresh our portfolio. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and by continually listening to what our customers want and need, we are well positioned for future growth in London and across the UK.”
Reshaping the Customer Experience
The investment also reflects a broader trend within the grocery sector, with retailers increasingly focusing on enhancing the in-store experience. Waitrose’s efforts align with this trend by introducing new concepts and improving core offerings. The expansion of in-store bakery and patisserie ranges, responding to a 14% rise in bakery sales, is one such example. Innovations like hot wok counters and dedicated spaces for online order collections are also being trialled, positioning Waitrose for future growth and a stronger presence in the evolving retail news cycle. The retailer’s strategy is trending towards providing a more versatile and customer-centric shopping journey across its physical and digital channels.
