London’s Olympic Park Eyes Thrilling New Zipline Adventure from ArcelorMittal Orbit

London’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park could soon offer a new adrenaline-pumping experience with plans submitted for a major zipline attraction. The proposed ride would launch from the ArcelorMittal Orbit, Britain’s largest piece of public art and a lasting legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games.

A New Perspective from the Orbit

Adventure company Zip World, which took over operations of the ArcelorMittal Orbit in September 2024, has submitted planning applications to both Tower Hamlets and Newham councils for a significant new zipline. The proposed attraction would span approximately 440 metres, beginning with a launch from a platform on the existing 114.5-metre-tall ArcelorMittal Orbit structure in Newham. Riders would then travel across the River Lea to a newly constructed return tower, standing at just under 39 metres, located in Tower Hamlets, before being winched back to the Orbit. This switchback zipline is designed to offer a “unique and exhilarating experience”, providing thrill-seekers with stunning aerial views of the Olympic Park and the London skyline as they descend.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit: A Landmark Transformed

The ArcelorMittal Orbit, designed by artist Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond, was erected as a monument to the 2012 London Olympics. Standing at 114.5 metres, it features two observation platforms offering panoramic views of London’s landmarks. Alongside its spectacular views, the Orbit is also home to ‘The Slide’ (also known as Helix), the world’s tallest and longest tunnel slide, a 178-meter journey with 12 twists and turns. Despite these attractions, the Orbit has sought to increase its visitor numbers, with current plans aiming to attract an additional 60,000 visitors annually with the addition of the zipline and potentially a ‘gravity descender’ attraction.

Zip World’s Vision for Urban Adventure

Zip World, a prominent adventure operator known for attractions across Wales and England, including the world’s fastest zipline at Penrhyn Quarry, is investing £2.6 million into the ArcelorMittal Orbit. Their takeover of the Orbit’s operations marks their first permanent location in London and a significant milestone in their expansion. Zip World’s CEO, Andrew Hudson, stated that the company hopes this venture will “kick off a whole new era of excitement and adventure right in the heart of London”. The company is working closely with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and local planning authorities to bring this “European first-of-its-kind adventure” to fruition. The relaunch of the Orbit by Zip World in early 2025 has already enhanced existing experiences, and these new plans aim to further diversify the offerings within the Olympic Park.

Catalysing Tourism and Local Economy

The proposed zipline is expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing regeneration and legacy of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. By introducing a novel, high-thrill attraction, the zipline aims to boost visitor footfall, strengthen London’s reputation as a global tourist destination, and diversify the leisure offerings beyond sports and cultural events. The project is also anticipated to generate economic benefits and create local jobs. Tower Hamlets councillors are set to consider the planning application for the return tower on October 22nd, with Newham councillors still to consider the launch platform application. Planning officers have recommended approval, subject to conditions including operational hours and ride limits.

As the planning process continues, the prospect of soaring over the Olympic Park on a new zipline offers an exciting glimpse into the future of urban adventure in London. This news is trending among those looking to explore new attractions and enjoy unique experiences in the capital. The development is poised to add another dimension to the vibrant landscape of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, further cementing its status as a premier destination for both residents and tourists.
